The war on terror continues, but its first American goal is now a free man.
John Walker Linde, a Muslim convert from California, traveled to Afghanistan to join the Taliban in his teens and was released from Indiana prison this morning. The now 38-year-
On 2002, he admitted to helping the organization and carrying weapons.
He served 17 years at the age of 20.
His good behaviour qualifies him for early release and now he will be on parole for the next three years.
Linde has always maintained that he does not support terrorism and has never fought against his fellow Americans.
But that time in prison did not seem to change his radical view, and according to his recent correspondence, he now appears to be sympathetic to the Islamic State.
Many were angry at Linde's release.

In his appearance on Fox News this morning, the secretary of state said it was "unexplained and unreasonable," saying that Linde was still "threatening the United States and still committed to the jihad he was involved in.

The prison currently holds more than 450 prisoners convicted of terrorism.

At least 60 of them are scheduled to be released from now until 2024.
A report published last fall called "When terrorists go home" states that most of these criminals will still have a long life when they are re-tried.
