Anal heterosex among young people and implications for health promotion: a qualitative study in the UK - anal sex toys for men
Objective to explore the expectation, experience and situation of anal sex among young people.
Design qualitative, longitudinal studies using individual and group interviews.
Participants were 130 men and women aged 16-18 from different social backgrounds.
Set up 3 comparison sites in the UK (
London, industrial city north, rural southwest).
As a result, anal mouth disorder is usually painful, dangerous and mandatory, especially for women.
Respondents often refer to pornography as an "explanation" of anal sex, but their narrative reveals a complex context in which pornography is only one factor.
Other key factors include competition among men;
Claim that "if people do this, they will definitely like it "(
Made together with seemingly contradictory expectations, thinking this is painful for women);
It is essential that coercion and the normalization of "accidental" infiltration.
Men seem to be expected to persuade or coerce reluctant partners.
Conclusion the narrative of young people normalizes mandatory, painful and unsafe anal intercourse.
This study suggests that there is an urgent need for an effort to reduce injury against anal intercourse in order to help encourage discussions on mutual relations and consent, techniques to reduce danger and suffering, and to challenge the view of normalizing coercion

Anal sex is becoming more and more common among young people, but anal sex between men and women --
Although often described in explicit media
It is often absent in mainstream sex education and does not seem to be mentioned in many social settings.
According to the survey, young men and women
And the elderly
More anal sex than ever before.
1-4 sexually explicit media descriptions are often referred to affecting young people's perception and practice of sex, and 5-7 anal intercourse is considered one of the "high risk" practices of this media promotion, 8, 9, although there is little evidence about the effects of pornography on anal sex.
5 Studies of anal practice, which are often excessive18-year-
Older people aged 10-12 believe that young men may be more eager for anal sex than women and may be used to avoid pregnancy during menstruation, 12, 13 or vaginal intercourse and often protect themselves with condoms.
12-14 this may be painful for women aged 12, 13, 15, and for men and women it may be a pleasant part of sex.
16 years, 17 years, almost one year every five years. olds (
19% for men and 17% for women)
In a recent national survey in the UK, anal sex has been reported in the past year.
4 Little is known about the details or causes of anal intercourse among the following groups18-year-
Old people anywhere, or what these have to do with health.
This study examined in detail the anal practices of young people aged 18 and under 18, provided hypotheses for further studies, and suggested for Sexual Health Promotion.
Method design and data collection the narrative presented here about anal heterosexual disease is part of the study of longitudinal qualitative mixing methods (

Explore the scope and significance of different sexual behaviors of 130 young people aged 16-18 in three different locations in the UK: London; a medium-
Industrial city in the north, rural area in the southwest.
In January 2010, we conducted 9 group interviews and 71 in-depth interviews (
Bo Yi: 37 female 34 male), re-
Interview 43 in-depth respondents one year later (wave two)
Until June 2011.
The research ethics committee of the London School of Health and Tropical Medicine approved the study and all participants provided written consent.
For in-depth interviews, we used purposeful sampling to maximize changes in the social context.
At each location, we take samples from a range of environments, including: schools/colleges;
Youth work services for young people who do not receive education or training;
Youth organizations;
Supporting housing projects for young people independent of family life;
And informal networks.
We also used "snowballs" sampling, and in rural areas in the southwest, we were in direct contact with people in the city center.
There are differences in the economic and social context of the sample, and there are differences in race (
Most of the participants were white British).
For more details, see Lewis et al 18.
We stress in leaflets and conversations with potential respondents that we are eager to talk to young people regardless of their experiences.
Although participants differ in the range of activities they experience, the number and nature of sexual partnerships, most people report the opposite --
Only sexual partner
In the in-depth interview, we asked the respondents what sexual behaviors they were engaged in, what the situation of these behaviors was and how they felt about them.
In order for young people to have their own definitions, we deliberately make "sexual practice" undefined.
In the panel discussion, we asked general questions about what practices they had heard of and their attitude towards them, and whether or not they think that young people of their age are usually engaged in, if so, under what circumstances.
Many of our respondents talked about anal sex without prompting (
(Whether they are involved or not)
Therefore, in the second wave, we specifically asked all of our participants about their perception of them and, if relevant, their experience with anal practice (
About one quarter of us.
In-depth respondents report anal experience).
Our aim is to explore the key discourse around anal practice in this age group and describe the specific experiences in detail.
We recorded and transcribed the data analysis of all interviews.
We use iterative topic analysis to develop our understanding of data.
This involves extensive discussions between the "coded" transcription Group 19 and the researchers to jointly interpret the description of anal intercourse among young people, taking into account our own features (
White, middle.
Class women older than respondents)
And the impact these may have on the collected data.
We constantly compare cases with topics and seek "abnormal cases" to challenge the interpretation that we are emerging.
In the whole process of analysis, we carry out the work at the same time as the theoretical literature, and put the work in context.
We always use a unique identifier pseudonym.

Interview once unless otherwise stated, missing Mark […].
The results are reported to generally include penetration or attempted penetration by men with a penis or finger, with one exception, in the opposite casesex partners.
Anal sex usually occurs between young men and women in a "boyfriend/girlfriend" relationship.
Although a small number of respondents said anal sex (
Penetration with penis)
It is completely "gay" and it is generally believed that there is also such a situation between men and women.
The initial anal experience is rarely described from the perspective of mutual exploration of sexual pleasure.
Female reporting anal pain: he didn't warn me when the whole incident happened, just got hurt.
Just pain [laugh].
Like: No.
No one will like it.
It's just terrible […]
I think he might use the lubricant and maybe it would help but I don't know.
Obviously it really makes sense if you are nervous and I think it hurts more, but I don't understand how you can not be nervous [laugh]
In this case. (Emma)
Young men in our study, while often passionate about anal sex in principle, are sometimes not enthusiastic about physical reality: "To be honest, I think it will be much better "(Ali);
"Sometimes it feels better [
Sex than vagina]
But I won't say I like it better "(Max).
From the narrative of young people, it seems that condoms are not used very often, and when they use them, they are usually for basic hygiene, not for sexually transmitted infections (STI)
Prevention: "So there won't be shit on your dick "(Carl).
Some respondents mistakenly said that anal sexually transmitted infections are not possible, or are less likely than vaginal intercourse.
There are obvious gender differences in the description of anal sex: its benefits (
Indicators of sexual achievement)
It should be men, not women; its risks—
Respondents rarely mention the risk of sexually transmitted infections, but instead focus on the risk of pain or reputational damage --
Women, not men, are expected.
Our respondents did not describe anal sex as a way to maintain virginity or avoid pregnancy.
The main reason for anal sex among young people is that men want to copy what they see in porn and "too tight ".
This means that "tightening" is better for men, and it is said that this is what men want, while women feel anal pain, especially for the first time.
The explanation of "pornography" seems to be only partial at best, especially since young people seem to see this only as an incentive for men, not for women.
As we will see below, we have found other important explanations and motivations in the accounts of young people.
There are key themes that have emerged in our interview that help explain why, despite the reluctance of women, the expectations of women's suffering, and the apparent lack of fun for men and women, this practice continues:
Claim that "if people do this, they will definitely like it "(
In addition to the seemingly contradictory expectations that are painful for women); and—crucially—
The normalization of coercion and "accidental" infiltration.
Competition between men, though not all young people want anal sex (
Say it's not for them)
Many men say they encourage each other to try this, and men and women say men want to tell their friends that they have anal sex.
In the group discussion, men say anal sex is "what we do for the game" and "Every hole is a goal ".
In contrast, men and women say that women risk their fame for the same behavior, a double standard of sex familiar in previous literature.
If they do, 20 people will certainly like it, although they claim that anal sex is inevitably painful for women, although it usually does not relate pain to any sexual pleasure, men and women also often express seemingly contradictory views that anal sex is actually enjoyable for women: it is clear that people will like it if they do. (Naomi)
There are quite a few girls who like it.
But I think most girls will like the quiet environment and I think they may like it. (Shane)
It is often suggested by those who do not participate in the practice that it "must" be enjoyable.
Women who experience pain are often described as naive or flawed.
Men and women say women need more "relaxation" to "get used to": I think boys like this.
I think it must have been the boy who pushed it while watching porn and stuff like that and they wanted to try it out.
The girl was scared and thought it was weird and then they tried it because the boyfriend wanted them to do it.
They don't usually like it because they're scared, I know, like anal sex, you don't relax if you don't want to, like if you have, you can control two muscles closest to the outside, and then inside, it's like involuntary, if you're afraid or you're not relaxing them as if they're kept tight, then you can tear them up if you try to force anal sex. (Mark [our emphasis])
Please note that mark almost casually mentions that a woman may be "afraid" or "unwilling" in the event of anal intercourse, and seems to assume a common understanding with the interviewer, this is usually the case.
Elsewhere in the interview, he talked about hurting his partner while anal sex was "sliding (see below)
So his conversation about "relaxation" might reflect his own --
Maybe recently.
Understand how it should be executed.
The normalization of forced and "accidental" infiltration seems to be taken for granted by many participants, arguing that women generally do not want anal sex and therefore need to be persuaded or forced.
Even in a seemingly communicative and caring partnership, some men seem to force their reluctant partners to have anal sex regardless of the belief that might hurt her (
While it should also be noted that other men say they avoid anal sex because they think it could hurt their partner).
Persuasion of women is, to a large extent, a feature of the narrative of most men and women about anal sex events, often referred to as repeated demands by men.
Women seem to take it for granted that they will acquiesce or resist the repeated demands of their partners rather than become equal partners in sexual decisions --making.
These women often cite "no" as a positive example of their control over the situation.
Some men also describe that they take a "try it" approach and insert a woman with a finger or penis, hoping she doesn't stop them.
Shane tells us that if a woman says no when he starts to "put'his]
He may continue to try: "I can be very persuasive […].
It's like sometimes you just go ahead and move on until they get tired of it and let you do it anyway. ".
"Try It" usually hurts the woman or is "unsuccessful "(
From a man's point of view)
In the sense of no penetration, "it just does not really enter ". (Jack)
The woman's verbal "no" does not necessarily stop an attempt at anal penetration: he tried to put it there. [Interviewer]
I just said no"[Interviewer]
Did he ask you first or did he just try?
He kept asking me at first.
I was like "no" but he tried it and I said "no ". [Interviewer]
Yes, no chance. (Molly)
In some cases, female anal penetration
Number or penis
Described as an accident by men and women (‘it slipped’).
For example, the Mark mentioned above told us that when he was "slippery" in his vagina --
His girlfriend had sex with his penis and inserted it.
Due to the nature of the data-
We rely on reports in interviews.
It is difficult to assess to what extent the event described as "sliding" is truly unintentional.
However, a person described a "mistake" during the first interview and he said to the interviewer --
He said he told his girlfriend.
It was an accident and he changed an account in his second interview :[Interviewer]
I think what you're talking about […]
In the first interview, there was a time […]you said it [his penis]slipped.
Well, I, I tried it. I said it slipped. [Interviewer]
So it didn't actually slip?
Isn't this an accident?
No, no, it's not an accident. (Jack)
Then, describing the event as "sliding" might make it intentional and unintentional for men and women to cover up infiltrationconsensual.
These accounts show that young women have little expectation of anal sex.
On the other hand, many young men clearly describe the desire to infiltrate from a woman.
This mismatch may help explain why women's "sliding" and "Persuasion" are common features of anal narrative.
Of those with anal and anal experiences, there are very few men, and only one woman mentions physical happiness in this young age group.
Alicia is the only woman who talks about a pleasant anal sex, and she shows some of the complexities of female navigation (and narrating)
Anal sex.
She described a fairly common pattern: her partner asked for anal sex and she initially refused but later agreed.
She found it painful and had a second experience, and her consent to anal penetration was suspicious (
"Just a little slippery ").
However, she is not typical because she emphasizes her agency in a positive way (
"I'm curious ")
And describes how she later enjoyed anal sex, which shows that they have found a way to engage in this practice that is satisfactory to both parties.
Her partner had anal sex before.
The first time she had anal sex with him was "really painful": I didn't want to try [anal sex]
Initially, I was not sure about the initial situation.
But I was a bit, he didn't, he said "no problem" but I still wanted to try it for him because I was interested.
I think I am very interested in why he is interested.
I'm curious about it […]
So I think this is […]
I just tried it for him.
She described the differences between their second anal sex in the first and second interviews :[First interview
We have [vaginal]
Another sex and it [his penis]
Just slipped in [into her anus]that way. [
Second interview
He just slipped in. …]
I don't think he thinks it's so painful for me.
I think he can make me like this.
In the first interview, Alicia was vague about what happened and described the incident as accidental (
"Just a little slippery ")
It may not be willing to draw attention to the lack of participation in this decision.
In the second interview, she knew more clearly that he had infiltrated her on purpose (
She may also have talked to her partner about it during the interview).
She presents it in a positive way (
He thought he could make me like it.
But her consent is still unclear.
In both interviews, she highlighted how much she enjoyed her subsequent anal intercourse with the same man, and any of them could trigger the situation.
Alicia is the only woman we interviewed describing having a happy experience from anal sex, including orgasm. Yeah.
I love it because I feel like I love how he feels about my ass, just like it feels about the meat of your ass, like it's a buff.
So, I guess that's what I like, I'm not sure.
Alicia's situation is also unusual, and she acts more sexy in her relationship with her partner: "I'm not saying I like sex [
All practices, not just anal sex]
But what I want to say is that I prefer this.
I will launch more ".
In the previous work, we have shown how the explanation of the obvious mandatory event changes over time, which may be better, later, the experience in the context of continuous relationship allows her to integrate the original less pleasant experience into the narrative of personal growth in stable relationships, especially when she began to enjoy the practice of finding pain in the first place.
Despite being generally positive, Alicia's description also contains signs of reluctance (
"I don't want to try [. . . ]I was unsure”).
Even when she talks about enjoying this practice, her narrative has the potential to be somewhat influenced by the expectations of society for women to resist anal sex.
Similarly, men do not spontaneously talk about not enjoying penetration into women, only to mention this after asking questions directly, supporting other works that describe the responsibility of men to express only positive sexual concepts.
22. The main reason for 23 anal sex young people anal sex is that men want to copy what they see in pornography and "too tight ".
This means that "tightening" is better for men, and it is said that this is what men want, while women feel anal pain, especially for the first time.

22, 23 there are very few young men or women in the discussion who report that they feel that anal sex is pleasant and all think that anal sex is painful for women.
This study explains why anal sex still occurs despite this.
Respondents often cite pornography as an "explanation" for anal sex, but seem to see it only as a male motivation.
A more comprehensive picture of why women and men have anal sex is available from their accounts.
Anal intercourse appears to occur in the context of at least five specific features related to the above-mentioned key topic of interpretation: first, some male narratives indicate that, the relationship and consent of anal sex is not always their priority.
Respondents often casually talk about the penetration of women who may be hurt or intimidated (
"You can tear them up if you try to force anal sex ";
"You just have to keep going until they are tired and let you do it anyway . ")
, Which shows that not only do they expect coercion to be part of anal sex (
Under normal circumstances, even if it is not for yourself)
But many of them accept or at least do not explicitly challenge it.
Some incidents, especially the "accidental" infiltration reported by some respondents, are ambiguous in terms of whether they are classified as rape (ie, non-
Penetration agreed by both parties
But we know from Jack's interview that an "accident" could have happened on purpose.
Second, women who are entangled in anal sex seem to be considered normal.
Third, the widely circulated ideas that "all people" like, those women who are free of defects or just conservative to enjoy secrets, help support such a wrong idea, that is, a man pushing anal sex is just "convincing" his partner to do something "Most girls will like.
Even Alicia's narrative contains some of the obvious mandatory features of anal intercourse reported negatively by other women, although Alicia reports to enjoy anal intercourse.
Fourth, today's anal sex seems to be (hetero)
Sexual achievement or experience, especially for men.
The society in which our respondents live seems to reward men for their sexual experience (
Every hole is a ball)
To some extent, women are rewarded with sexual "adventure" behavior (
Enjoyment means not being naive, not relaxing, etc)
Although women must strike a balance between this and reputational risk.
Women may also be under pressure to appear to enjoy or choose certain sexual acts: Jill describes "post-feminist sensitivity" in contemporary media, in which case, women should show that they have chosen the behavior that is consistent with heterosexual male fantasy stereotypes.
24 a common description of anal heterosexual disease in men's ability to break down female resistance can be compared with a description of the first vaginal interval, perhaps it is considered normal to have been replaced to some extent in the context of pre-marital vaginal intercourse in the UK, so perhaps it is not "conquest ".
Fifth, many men do not express concern about the possible suffering of women, which is considered inevitable.
Less painful technology (
Such as slow penetration speed)
Little discussion.
At present, the context of this apparent oppression, as well as the practice of the anal opposite sex itself, seems to have been ignored in policy and in sex education for this young group.
Attitudes such as the inevitable suffering of women or the lack of recognition or reflection on potential coercive behaviour in society do not appear to be questioned.
Alicia's case shows how women absorb potentially negative experiences into a holistic narrative of control, desire, and joy, all of which she emphasizes in the narrative.
We do not believe that it is impossible to engage in mutually beneficial anal sex in this age group or that all men want to force their partners.
Rather, we would like to emphasize how, in the narrative of anal intercourse, mutual sex and the joy of women are often absent, and not only are their absences not marked, there is no doubt, but many young people seem to be looking forward to that as well.
Previous work has shown that gender power may operate differently for different sexual behaviors, and sexual "scripts "(
Expectations on how to start and execute practices)
For anal sex, it may not be as mature as vaginal sex.
Our findings suggest that, without challenge, coercion could be the dominant script for anal sex among these young people.
Further work needs to be done to assess the degree of operation of similar coercive discourse among young people in other countries.
This is a qualitative study,
An in-depth analysis of a sample that is typically smaller than an epidemiology study, but this sample spans three sites and different social groups.
Whether the concept of "general competence" should be applied in qualitative research is a controversial issue, but we believe that this study provides something useful, credible work assumptions or theories about anal sex between young men and women may apply outside our group of respondents.
Sex education, especially what it should contain, is the subject of a global debate.
Prevention of sexually transmitted infections, HIV and violence is a priority for health promotion worldwide.
However, sex education rarely involves specific sexual behaviors, such as anal sex between men and women --
Although these statements reveal the possibility of disease transmission and coercion.
In the UK where the institute is located, good sex education includes discussions about happiness, suffering, consent and coercion, but this education is still isolated, temporary and non-compulsory.
Conclusion anal intercourse among young people in this study seems to occur in the context of encouraging pain, risk and stress.
Efforts to reduce injury in response to anal intercourse may help to encourage discussions about mutual relations and consent, techniques to reduce danger and suffering, and to challenge the view of normalizing coercion.
