Prevention of Human immune deficiency virus (HIV)
A person living in the United StatesS.
According to a new analysis, more than $250,000 was saved in the remaining life cycle.
Based on an estimate of life span and medical expenses after 35 years of age, the researchers found that avoiding the virus that causes AIDS can save between $229,800 and $338,400, depending on the amount of care a person receives.
Bruce Shakman, who led the study, said that once
Medical expenses are taken into account, including the productivity of a person reduced by infection.
"Avoiding HIV infections does save a lot of money," says Schackman, a professor of psychiatry and public health at wilcornell Medical School in New York City.
Estimates of these savings will help researchers and policy makers judge costs.
He said the effectiveness of HIV prevention methods.
The results, published in the journal Health Care and released on Tuesday at the Seattle Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, are an update to the 2006 estimate.
For the analysis, the researchers used data on the cost of health care and prescription drugs to determine how much medical costs would be spent on an average of HIV-infected people at age 35.
Adjusted for inflation, an estimated 2006 per cent was $361,400.
To measure medical costs, the team also estimated the remaining life span of children under 35 years of ageyear-
Elderly people living with HIV and those who are not living with HIV.
In 2012, life expectancy for HIV-infected people aged 35 was estimated at 29 years.
Five years, they reported.
For uninfected persons of the same age, life expectancy increased by 38 years.
A model shows that if an infected person immediately continues to receive antiretroviral therapy or ART's combined medication, they spend $435,200 on medical care for the rest of their lives.
Because a lot of people don't start receiving ART treatment immediately and often get inconsistent treatment, researchers run a second model to simulate more typical medical expenses.
In this case, the average HIV
In the remaining years, the infected person will spend about $326,500 on care.
Then compare these costs to $96,700, which is the average medical cost for people under 35 in the remaining life cycleyear-
Elderly people without HIV infection.
It is important to compare the estimated savings and costs of HIV prevention methods, including condoms and prevention, Schackman said
Exposure to prevent or prepare daily doses of antiviral drugs.
According to US data, PrEP may reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 92%S.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The PrEP pill currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration is Truvada of Gilead.
In addition to pills or condoms, Schackman said, there are other costs that need to be considered, including regular blood tests to check for infections.
He added that according to the New York State Department of Health, PrEP's cost-benefit analysis has just begun to emerge, with costs ranging from $8,000 to $14,000 per year.
"I think this is high-
Risk groups, "Schackman said.
"So the benefits will be even greater for people who really have a high risk of infection.
"CDC recommends getting ready for gay or bisexual men without anal sex, or men with sexually transmitted infections in the past six months.
The agency also recommends taking birth control pills for men and women who do not have sex with people with unknown HIV status, or for men and women who have sex with people at high risk of HIV, and people who inject drugs.
