Men who have sex with men (MSM)
The risk of chlamydia and gonoseria infection is high.
Many men who have sex with men use Rectal flushing when preparing for sex, which may disrupt the function of the mucosal barrier and promote the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections.
We determined whether rectal flushing or shared Flushing equipment was related to chlamydia anorectal and gonorrhoea.
Methods in crossover
From February to April 2011, among the 994 men who had sex with men at the STI clinic in Amsterdam, data were collected on rectal flushing, sexual behavior and STI.
We used a multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine the association between rectal Flushing (including shared Flushing equipment) and chlamydia anorectal and gonorrhoea reported to those who received anal intercourse.
We adjusted other risk behaviors, namely condom use, number of partners and HIV status.
Results of 994 men having sex, 46% (n=460)
Rectal flushing, of which 25% (n=117)
Shared flush device.
The median age is 39 years (IQR 30–47)
The median number of sexual partners in the first 6 months of consultation is 5 (IQR 3–10)and 289 (29. 0%)
The participants were HIV positive.
The reported prevalence of chlamydia and/or gonoseria in the anal sex patients was 9. 6% (n=96).
HIV positive in multivariate analysis (aOR=2. 2, 95% CI 1. 3 to 3. 6), younger age (aOR=2. 5, CI 1. 4 to 4.
