A judge in Sydney said he suspected a former soldier who had been at the heart of the group.
The man known as the Jedi Council sex ring felt real remorse for his actions.
Hastings Fredriksson pleaded guilty in August because he secretly took photos of himself having sex with a woman and distributed photos of the encounter.
The court heard that the former commandos emailed several photos to 12 other members of the self-proclaimed Jedi Council on July 2010.
Fredrickson is described as the core figure of the group, which includes a lieutenant

In the Mail, Fredriksson called himself "Wolf of woollomorow" and described the woman he had slept with as "prostitute" and "mole ".
He also boasted that doing anal sex with a woman "is like you stole her soul ".
On Monday, Judge Paul Lakatos described the title in the email as "tasteless" and "contempt" and described the name of the Jedi Council as "childish and unimaginative" to Star Wars

Known as the Skype scandal in 2011, a defense academy student secretly took photos of her sexual relationship with another student.
On August, Fredrickson acknowledged three charges of using transportation services for crimes, as his lawyer admitted that three of the six emails sent by his client were objectively offensive.
Three other identical charges were dropped.
Fredriksson, a former special forces signboard, told the court that he was fully responsible for his actions and admitted that filming and spreading the details of his sexual contact clearly violated trust.
He said he has been trying to find a job since the scandal broke out and has been forced to work part-time

But Judge Lakatos said Fredrickson's actions were well thought out and he suspected he had really regretted them.
Fredrickson will continue his bail before another hearing next month, when he will be assessed for a possible reinforcement correction order, which means he may not provide a full service
