On Tuesday, a man who stole $356 worth of sex toys from an adult sex toy store was jailed for a week (24 July).
On July 22, 52-year-old Tan Swan Peng stole a $149 vibration ring, a $89 vibrator and a $118 toy.
The next day, when he returned to the store, he was caught by a sales assistant working at the sex toy store Casanova in Chinatown.
Tan admitted a case of home theft on Tuesday.
Another similar charge was taken into account in his judgment.
On the night of the incident, Tan was browsing items in the store.
After checking that the staff did not monitor him, Tan removed his body from the payment counter and stuffed an item into his plastic bag.
He stole two more things before leaving the store.
A female sales assistant noticed that something was missing from the store and checked CCTV footage from the store.
The next day, when Tan returned to the store, the sales assistant recognized him and informed her manager, who called the police.
Prosecutors demanded four weeks for Tan's past crimes.
Tan was convicted of theft in 2016 and fined $1,300.
Shaneet Rai, a criminal legal aid program lawyer, said his client had divorced and had been seeking treatment for panic disorder at the Mental Health Institute since 2014.
After being sent back for retrial for theft on 2016, Tan was further diagnosed with forced personality traits, the lawyer said.
"Tan claims that he suffered panic attacks due to his family's nagging about his unemployment situation and went out for a while to calm himself down," Shaneet said . ".
"He passed a sex shop and entered out of curiosity, causing a crime.

The lawyer asked for a three-week prison sentence for Tan, who said his client would continue to seek treatment for his illness.
