The use of sex toys is common in same-sex relationships and heterosexual people.
There is evidence that sexual toys may be a form of transmission of many sexually transmitted infections (STI).
This is clearly recognized in the literature of BASHH and FSRH, so we have to discuss with patients the importance of safe use of sex toys. Aim(s)
Our goal is to evaluate whether clinicians often discuss the use of sex toys;
If so, does it provide advice to who on a regular basis after diagnosis.
Methods a questionnaire was designed and sent to the local health care clinic.
The reply is anonymous using the website link.
Respondents were asked, among other questions, whether they often discussed the use of sex toys with patients and, if so, when to discuss with whom;
And what advice was given on the use of sex toys after the diagnosis of STI.
The responses received as a result were mainly from consultants and specialist nurses.
25% sexual toys are often discussed during safety discussions.
Respondents believe that women who have sex with women and men who have sex with men (
94%, 84%, respectively)
The discussion benefited the most.
22% the possible transmission of sexually transmitted infections by sexual toys was discussed;
However, 88% did not routinely give advice after STI diagnosis.
Discussion/conclusion results indicate that, despite the evidence, there is limited discussion in this group of clinicians about safe behavior with sex toys.
This can lead to a population of our patients not being aware of, and unnecessary transmission of infection.
To improve this, education will be conducted through our regional BASHH conference.
