TORONTO —
A professor at the University of Waterloo posted a photo of a costume on social media, and hundreds of people condemned the goal of selling "sex discrimination" baby pajamas.
The boy costume has the Superman logo and the "future Iron Man", while the girl costume has the same logo but one line: "I only date the hero.
"It seems a bit ridiculous to talk about who a baby girl is going to date," said Amy Morrison, an associate professor of UW English.
"Even for little babies, we seem to think that girls have gained power and value, that they have a romantic connection with girls, and that boys can be agents of action themselves.
"This photo was taken by Morrison's friend Christine Loeger at the local Target store over the weekend, and she is an associate professor of social development at the University.
Loeger was buying toys for her two daughters, three and eight, when she saw the sleepers for her three daughters --month-olds.
"My heart really sank," said social psychologist Logel through training . ".
"I'm tired of seeing this information everywhere.
"The clerk thought they were cute," she said . "
Logel initially put the picture of PJs on Facebook, but barely got any traction.
The women then decided to share the image on Morrison's Twitter account, triggering hundreds of retweets and comments.
This reaction strongly opposes gender stereotypes, and many of the respondents have cited their own examples.
One person sent her a picture of a similar scene, one shirt with the words "training to be Batman" and the other with the words "training to be Batman's wife ".
Another said she found the same target costume in New Brunswick.
Response from Spain.
The girl shirt in Spanish says "beautiful as a mother" while the boy shirt says "smart as a father ".
Morrison said: "The key is that the stereotypes found in the Target clothing are not isolated events.
"They sent me pictures one after another very easily and very quickly, showing this, but there is no clear discussion about the bias towards girls and women from the perspective of sexual currency and men as far as their ability to conquer is concerned, she said.
Not everyone thinks there is a problem with clothing.
A netizen wrote on Twitter: "There are more important problems in the world, such as world hunger . "
Target declined to discuss the issue, but issued a statement stating that "we strive to respect all our guests and we have never had the intention to offend anyone.
"We appreciate the feedback we have received and will continue to hear from our guests to ensure that the goods we offer can attract and reflect our diverse group of guests," the company said . ".
Logel was not impressed with the company's response, saying she was "really thinking better" about Target ".
However, she is pleased with the response from social media.
"The most likely disturbing part of pajamas like that and similar outfits is that it does affect the way adults treat babies," Logel said . ". "(But)
I'm really happy to see how many people want the little one to have the chance to be when they grow up.
