Condom maker Troy presented 10,000 vibrators on the streets of New York City in August, but it was difficult to bring the same promotion to Boston.
The company asked for a giveaway permit at Boston City Hall Square.
But the mayor's office sent a letter to Trojan asking it to find an "alternative site ".
Michael Galvin, director of property management at Mayor Tom Menino's office, wrote, "I have been told that if you insist against our objections, the public nature of the square provides you with legal protection for distributing these products, but I will tell you in the strongest terms that I feel this is inappropriate and irresponsible use of the square.
"The mayor's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Bruce Weiss, vice president of Trojan health marketing, said the company will continue to work with the city to find the right place to host the Trojan Vibrator Giveaway.
"We hope this is a pleasant experience for everyone," he said in a statement . ".
A spokesman for the company previously said that the publicity generated through the giveaway could help to eliminate social stigma associated with talking about or using these devices.
In the two days of August, visitors and residents of New York lined up to wait for the free vibrators of Troy's vibrating arcade cars designed to mimic New York's ubiquitous hot dog cars.

Phoria Intimate Massager and Trojan Pulse Intimate Massager were first launched in 2010, usually retail for $30 and $40.
New York City officials stopped the giveaway on the first day, saying the company did not get the proper license but resumed the release the next day.
